SHAPE Program: Producer Recruitment Opportunity

MACD is sharing information about SHAPE (Soil Health Assessment Protocol and Evaluation), a new farmer-friendly NRCS tool designed to benchmark soil health across the country and connect soil health conditions with management practices.

The project is currently seeking farmers and ranchers representing a variety of land uses, management practices, and soil health conditions.

How Conservation Districts Can Help

Districts are encouraged to:

• Share information about SHAPE with producers.
• Help identify producers who may be a good fit.
• Refer interested producers to participate.

Producer participation includes an approximately one-hour virtual management interview and soil sampling on 2–3 fields. A SHAPE contractor will conduct the interview, collect and ship soil samples, and provide producers with their soil health results at no cost to the producer.

District staff are encouraged to participate in the virtual interview when they have an existing relationship with the producer.

Montana’s current recruitment needs include:

• 81 annually planted crop fields
• 13 rangeland fields
• 6 CRP fields
