07-03: Requiring Transportation Corridors to Accommodate Landowners Who Need to Move Water

WHEREAS, it is the intent of the state of Montana to encourage wise and practical use of it’s water resources and it is currently very difficult to get permission to run water lines for irrigation, stockwater, municipal and other agricultural uses under rail or roadways; and

WHEREAS, the continuing drought and farm economy has increased the need for water lines;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that transportation corridors are required in order to accommodate water users who need to move water for Agricultural and Municipal uses.  MACD is directed to work with Montana Department of Transportation, Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, Montana Department of Agriculture and other appropriate entities/agencies to alleviate problems with moving water through or under current road and rail ways and encourage the use of Montana’s waters for Agricultural and Municipal uses.

One goal would be that a report be submitted to the Interim Water Policy Sub-committee detailing how water transportation corridors will be developed and what resources will need to be provided by state government.
