SUMMARY:Conservation Outcomes Webinar: Water Quality Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Conservation Outcomes Webinar:\nLessons Learned for Water Quality Outcomes: Conservation Planning and Implementation for Healthy Watersheds\nOctober 24\, 2024  \n12:00PM-01:00PM \nConservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) Watershed Assessment Studies provide in-depth evaluation of water quality\, water availability\, and soil concerns at the watershed scale and within. What have we learned about managing for water quality outcomes and watershed health through CEAP? Our next Conservation Outcomes Webinar\, scheduled for October 24 at 2:00 p.m. eastern\, will answer this question and more. \nDr. Deanna Osmond will share lessons learned\, synthesized from 13 watershed-scale studies of conservation effects conducted under CEAP by universities in partnership with USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). This free\, one-hour webinar is open to all and will highlight the effects of cropland and pastureland conservation practices on water quality outcomes at the watershed scale. Dr. Osmond will share key insights and lessons learned to inform conservation planning and implementation in agricultural watersheds as well as ways to further improve water quality benefits of conservation. Producers\, conservationists\, watershed managers\, and researchers may use the recommendations shared during this webinar to strengthen management efforts for cleaner water and healthier watersheds nationwide. \nDr. Osmond worked at the interface of nutrient management\, water quality\, and conservation practices at North Carolina State University (recently retired). She led a collaborative effort with NRCS\, NIFA\, and a large team of university researchers\, extension professionals\, and USDA Agricultural Research Service scientists to synthesize the lessons learned on watershed conservation practice effects for water quality and soil resources. She extended her findings through outreach and engagement with government agency and non-governmental organization personnel\, informing water quality conservation programs today. \nRegistration Details  \nRegistration is not required. You may access the webinar via Microsoft Teams on October 24 by clicking “Join Webinar\,” below. You may also join via audio only: \nPhone Number: 202-650-0123\nPhone Conference ID: 890 217 184# \nJoin Meeting Here

SUMMARY:Yesterday's Phosphorus\, Today's Water Quality Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Conservation Outcomes Webinar: Yesterday’s Phosphorus\, Today’s Water Quality: Conservation Insights from the USDA Legacy Phosphorus Assessment Webinar\nAugust 22\, 2024 \n12:00pm-1:00pm \nPhosphorus\, a critical fertilizer nutrient required for crop production\, can trigger unwanted changes to aquatic systems when it ends up in our water bodies. For producers and conservationists\, testing the soil and managing today’s additions of phosphorus in fertilizer and manure is just the first important step. Historical sources of phosphorus accumulate in soils\, wetlands\, and streams. As a result\, today’s water quality may reflect a phosphorus legacy that doesn’t readily respond only to SMART Nutrient Management. Mitigating legacy phosphorus requires targeted conservation in fields\, at the edges of fields\, and in watersheds. This may require new approaches to conservation. \nDr. Peter Kleinman will share recent insights from USDA’s Legacy Phosphorus Assessment Project during our free\, one-hour Conservation Outcomes Webinar. Dr. Kleinman is a Research Leader with USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Fort Collins\, Colorado. He coordinates this collaborative effort between USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service and ARS to advance the science\, innovation\, and forecasting of legacy phosphorus mitigation strategies and ultimately support water quality improvements. Findings will be presented from Conservation Effects Assessment Project watersheds within the Chesapeake Bay\, Lake Champlain\, Lake Erie\, Mississippi River\, and Snake River. Producers\, conservationists\, and researchers may use the conservation insights shared during this webinar to strengthen legacy phosphorus mitigation efforts and improve water quality nationwide. \nMicrosoft Teams Information: \nRegistration is not required. Access the webinar via Microsoft Teams shortly before 2:00 p.m. eastern on August 22 by clicking “Join Webinar\,” below. Users on smartphones may need to download Microsoft Teams in advance. \nYou may also join via audio only: \nPhone Number: 202-650-0123\nPhone Conference ID: 502 499 365# \nJoin Here

SUMMARY:Conservation Outcomes Web Series
DESCRIPTION:Conservation Outcomes Web Series: Emerging Findings on the Effects of Cover Crops on Grassland Birds\nApril 25  12:00pm-1:00pm \nAs the use of cover crops to improve soil health and reduce water quality concerns on working cropland has increased in recent years\, questions have emerged regarding the value of cover crops to wildlife. For example\, do cover crops provide needed habitat for grassland birds\, a group that has experienced widespread population decline in recent decades? What is the value of cover crop fields to grassland birds during the winter\, spring migration\, and breeding periods compared to cropland fields without cover crops or areas of perennial cover? \nDr. Adam Janke of Iowa State University and Dr. David Buehler of the University of Tennessee will provide answers to these questions and more during our free\, one-hour Conservation Outcomes Webinar. This webinar will share findings from recent studies examining bird use of cover crops in Iowa and Tennessee conducted in partnership with USDA’s Conservation Effects Assessment Project. Findings may be used to support on-the-ground cropland management decisions informed by a better understanding of the potential role of cover crops in grassland bird conservation efforts. \nMore Information \n  \nJoin Meeting Below  \nJoin Teams Meeting \nYou may also join via audio only: \nPhone Number: 202-650-0123\nPhone Conference ID: 554 587 395#
