SUMMARY:Lewis and Clark CD: Beaver Creek Restoration Project Tour
DESCRIPTION:Lewis and Clark CD: Beaver Creek Restoration Project Tour\nJune 20\, 2024 \n 05:30pm-07:00pm \nThe Beaver Creek Restoration restoration project was completed recently and the organizations involved would like to show it off! This event is limited to 20 people\, so register early if you are interested. This event is in conjunction with the Helena CORE Summer Walk Series. \nThis walk will cover the 2 phases of restoration work of Beaver Creek. Beaver Creek was listed as an impaired stream by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality for both sediment and riparian damage. The Forest Service and the Montana Department of Fish\, Wildlife and Parks had also noted declines in spawning rainbow trout over the past 20 years due to angling pressure\, predation\, whirling disease\, and continued habitat degradation.\nProject goals are to improve fish habitat and water quality\, restore floodplain connectivity to support riparian vegetation\, and create additional wetland habitat. Treatments included reconstructing the channel to former floodplain elevations to create additional stream meanders (sinuosity) since the stream was artificially straightened to support agricultural practices. Restoring the stream to historic elevations and expanding the floodplain will further support emergent and scrub-shrub wetlands. \nRegistration opens on June 6 \nEvent Information and Registration

The Gallatin Watershed Council\, Craighead Institute\, and Sacajawea Audubon Society have partnered to enhance wildlife habitat\, improve water quality\, and increase shade along the small stream that runs through the park. This project is the second phase of planting at this site\, adding to last year’s successful planting of 58 native trees and shrubs. All are welcome\, and we hope to see you there on Thursday\, Friday\, or both evenings! \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:MEPA Working Group
DESCRIPTION:MEPA Working Group\nJune 27\, 2024 \n04:00pm \nZoom Registration \nThe MEPA Workgroup convened by DEQ in January 2024 has released its draft final report for public review and comment. Over the past five months\, the workgroup met to discuss some of the biggest perceived challenges associated with implementation of the Montana Environmental Policy Act (MEPA). The workgroup heard presentations from DEQ staff and individual members\, considered public comment\, and discussed key challenges\, barriers\, and potential solutions. The report contains 12 detailed recommendations for consideration by state policymakers. Though the workgroup focused most of its attention on DEQ and DEQ’s implementation of MEPA\, these recommendations may apply to multiple state agencies. \nThe recommendations included in this report do not reflect full consensus from the workgroup. Where members disagreed\, the differing opinions and opposing viewpoints they shared are documented throughout the report. \nFor more information about the work group\, visit: https://deq.mt.gov/about/MEPA \nAssociated Documents: \n\nDraft Final Report of the MEPA Workgroup\n\nComment Period Closes: June 24\, 2024 \nSubmit Comments To: DEQ’s Public Comment Portal
