SUMMARY:Conservation Outcomes Web Series
DESCRIPTION:Conservation Outcomes Web Series: Emerging Findings on the Effects of Cover Crops on Grassland Birds\nApril 25  12:00pm-1:00pm \nAs the use of cover crops to improve soil health and reduce water quality concerns on working cropland has increased in recent years\, questions have emerged regarding the value of cover crops to wildlife. For example\, do cover crops provide needed habitat for grassland birds\, a group that has experienced widespread population decline in recent decades? What is the value of cover crop fields to grassland birds during the winter\, spring migration\, and breeding periods compared to cropland fields without cover crops or areas of perennial cover? \nDr. Adam Janke of Iowa State University and Dr. David Buehler of the University of Tennessee will provide answers to these questions and more during our free\, one-hour Conservation Outcomes Webinar. This webinar will share findings from recent studies examining bird use of cover crops in Iowa and Tennessee conducted in partnership with USDA’s Conservation Effects Assessment Project. Findings may be used to support on-the-ground cropland management decisions informed by a better understanding of the potential role of cover crops in grassland bird conservation efforts. \nMore Information \n  \nJoin Meeting Below  \nJoin Teams Meeting \nYou may also join via audio only: \nPhone Number: 202-650-0123\nPhone Conference ID: 554 587 395#

SUMMARY:Conservation Reserve Program Outcomes Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Conservation Reserve Program Outcomes Webinar\nMay 23\, 2024  \n01:00pm-02:00pm \nSpatial Models of Grassland Quality and Risk of Conversion for Evaluating CRP Enrollment \nPresenter: Kevin W. Barnes\, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service \nAbstract: Grasslands\, especially those on the economic margin\, face mounting threats from agricultural expansion and development. To safeguard these valuable systems\, Grassland CRP offers financial support to protect high-quality grasslands at risk of conversion while allowing sustainable grazing and haying. \nUsing consistent\, transparent\, evidence-based decision-support tools for prioritizing Grassland CRP enrollment can ensure program effectiveness and accountability. \nThis study introduces three innovative spatial models for evaluating candidate parcels: \n\nLand cover classification model identifying potentially undisturbed grasslands\nLandscape-scale predictions of future grassland conversion to cropland or development\nBioindicator metrics of ecosystem health/wildlife benefits\n\n*After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nFor more information about webinars and assessments\, visit FSA’s Monitoring\, Assessment\, and Evaluation page. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Lewis and Clark CD: Beaver Creek Restoration Project Tour
DESCRIPTION:Lewis and Clark CD: Beaver Creek Restoration Project Tour\nJune 20\, 2024 \n 05:30pm-07:00pm \nThe Beaver Creek Restoration restoration project was completed recently and the organizations involved would like to show it off! This event is limited to 20 people\, so register early if you are interested. This event is in conjunction with the Helena CORE Summer Walk Series. \nThis walk will cover the 2 phases of restoration work of Beaver Creek. Beaver Creek was listed as an impaired stream by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality for both sediment and riparian damage. The Forest Service and the Montana Department of Fish\, Wildlife and Parks had also noted declines in spawning rainbow trout over the past 20 years due to angling pressure\, predation\, whirling disease\, and continued habitat degradation.\nProject goals are to improve fish habitat and water quality\, restore floodplain connectivity to support riparian vegetation\, and create additional wetland habitat. Treatments included reconstructing the channel to former floodplain elevations to create additional stream meanders (sinuosity) since the stream was artificially straightened to support agricultural practices. Restoring the stream to historic elevations and expanding the floodplain will further support emergent and scrub-shrub wetlands. \nRegistration opens on June 6 \nEvent Information and Registration

SUMMARY:Eastern Health Snail Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Eastern Health Snail Meeting\nSeptember 12\, 2024 \n06:00pm-08:00pm  \nEagles Lodge  \n124 W Main Street \nLewistown\, MT  \nEastern Heath Snails Identified in Lewistown\nLewistown\, M.T.  The Fergus Conservation District announced the detection of Eastern Heath Snails (Xerolenta obvia) in the Lewistown area. This is the first detection of the snail in Fergus County. This invasive species\, native to Europe\, poses a potential threat to local agriculture and natural habitats. \nThe USDA – Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service confirmed the discovery after a report was sent to the Montana Invasive Species Council in late July. Subsequent sampling at the reported site revealed an established but isolated population. \nThis will be a public meeting to discuss about the recent discovery and next steps that will be taking place.
